Carl Cowen is a professor of mathematics at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In his thirty years of service to the profession, he has served as Dean of Sciences at IUPUI, Departmental Chair at Purdue University, member of the SIAM and AMS Committees on Education, member of the Advisory Board for the Institute for Mathematics and Education (U. Arizona), and last but not least, President of the Mathematical Association of America (2005--2007). Professor Cowen's dedication to mathematics education has also manifested itself in the form of three textbooks, eleven Ph.D. students, numerous teaching awards and, most recently, an address at the Joint Meetings in San Diego on  teaching and Technology. He brings to the panel his experience incorporating real applications into the linear algebra curriculum for math majors at Purdue and IUPUI.
